The third annual Volcom Pipe Pro, an ASP 5-Star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event, is setting up for another amazing showdown at Pipe. The 2012 waiting period is January 23rd to February 4th
112 potential warriors are anxiously waiting for the winds to create the battle ground where they can compete against each other on one of the most dangerous waves on the planet. They do so for fame, for glory, for valuable rating points at for their share of the $130,000 USD in prize money.
For local Hawaiian competitors, the Volcom Pipe Pro can mean a lot more since it is the only chance non-World Tour surfers have to gain entry into the final event of this 2012 year, the Billabong Pipe Masters, which is the final leg of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing to be held next December.
Just ask young John John Florence, a local surfer from Sunset, who earned the right to compete with the world’s best at last year’s Volcom Pipe Pro. Not that many weeks ago as double overhead barrels raged on, John competed head to head against the top competitors in the world. Imagine, even with a couple of “perfect tens”, John John Florence was eliminated not far from the final rounds of the Billabong Pipe Masters.
