Talk Story with Clyde Aikau

Surfer [the bar] at Turtle Bay Resort is honored to welcome a special guest on Wednesday, November 23rd, that needs no introduction to the local north shore community. Surfer will open at 6pm and the “Talk Story” session with Mr. Aikau will start at 8pm. A $5 cover charge is required, but it will be donated to Mr. Aikau’s designated charity.

For those who are not from our north shore, Clyde Aikau grew up on a Chinese cemetery (his father and family were hired to maintain it). He sailed on the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea and he has saved countless lives as a Waimea Bay lifeguard. He has surfed in and won over his lifetime the Makaha, the old Duke event on the north shore and the Eddie Aikau event at Waimea. The Duke Kathanamoku Foundation has named him a “Waikiki Surfing Legend”.  Yet with all his massive personal accomplishments, Clyde Aikau is most widely known the world over as “Eddie Aikau’s little brother”.

Come “Talk Story” with renowned surfing legend Clyde Aikau on Wednesday, November 23nd, at the newly opened Surfer at Turtle Bay Resort.

Surfer [The Bar] Grand Opening

Turtle Bay Resort announces that Surfer [the bar], will officially open with an extravagant night involving the who’s who of the Surfer world on Tuesday evening, November 15th. This grand opening event is by “invitation only” and will not be open to the general public.

Come join us Wednesday evening, November 16th, for the very first “Talk Story” session at Surfer. What better way to start out Surfer’s tenure at Turtle Bay Resort than with Fred Hemmings, the first ever Makaha International Surfing Championship Champion (subsequently won it again and again for a total of 4 times). He also won the Peruvian International Surfing Championship in 1964, and then from the surf of Rincon, Puerto Rico, the World Surfing Championship title in 1968. Hemmings was a steersman on four Molokai to Oahu Outrigger Canoe racing Champion teams and to this day he is a pioneer canoe surfing steersman. In 1991, Hemmings was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame, and in 1999 the Hawaii State Sports Hall of Fame. Fred also started what is now the Triple Crown of Surfing on Oahu’s Fabled North Shore.

Join us Wednesday to hear the story of Fred Hemmings, given from his own mouth. A $5 cover charge applies for this event, which will be donated to charity.

Surfer [The Bar] Fundraiser

Jack Johnson (left) thrilled the crowd with a late announced appearance at the benefit fundraiser that celebrated the life of Jasmine Keala Amona, a beautiful wahine that passed away on October 8, 2011 after a courageous battle against first thyroid cancer, which later spread to her lungs and brain.

Entitled “aia no i’o”, which translates as “yet to come”, this event brought top musicians from Hawaii and their friends for the purpose of raising funds to go towards the medical costs incurred during Jasmine’s cancer treatment, towards the creation of a fund for her seven year old daughter, and towards the establishment of the Pupuka Fund. Jasmine expressed her desire to create the Pupuka Fund, which will provide financial assistance to local children affected by cancer.

What a great way to introduce Surfer [The Bar], which actually does not officially open until Tuesday, than to utilize the venue and the talents of top musicians to raise money for one in need!

Hawaii Five-0 is back

Tonight is a night that Turtle Bay Resort has looked forward to. It is a night where one of Turtle Bay Resort’s favorites returns to prime time Hawaii…the night Terry O’Quinn (from LOST, which filmed on Turtle Bay Resort’s property each and every season) returns to Hawaii as the person who trained the head of Hawaii Five-0. As in the past, O’Quinn is here to fix everything.

For those who watched only LOST…this is a great transition into Five-0. For those who watched only Five-0…this is a great transition into LOST. For the fans of both…it is a time of celebration.

Turn your dials to CBS tonight and watch the season premier of Hawaii Five-0!

Mahalo Nui Loa Bob!

Today is a very special day at Turtle Bay Resort for anyone who worked with, met and/or experienced the life of Bob Boyle. One year ago today a very special friend left this world…but his memory and his spirit lives on with us in all that we do. He served as General Manager of Turtle Bay Resort for five years and in doing so, he touched thousands of lives.

Bob had an amazing way of infecting people…infecting them with a love of life and all the wonders that surround them every day, even in the daily activities of a job…infecting them with the desire to serve others; to reach out and do more…infecting them with an understanding of rituals and memories and how they should be used to give respect to loved ones and then be used to spur them on to bigger and better things. Bob would always encourage us to take time out on special days in the lives of those we love and then he would encourage us to honor that memory with action of our own.

So it was really only a natural response when Turtle Bay Resort’s Green Committee came up with the idea to have a beach cleanup project in memory of our friend Bob Boyle. So much so that when Bob’s wife saw our prior blog post announcing this event, she sent us the following, after copying all her friends and family about the event:

“Thank you for doing this.  Sure wish I could be there with all of you.  Bob would have wanted that [the beach cleanup] as I ALWAYS did ALL the cleaning in our 27 years together. Be sure and have a FUN time Saturday.  He would insist on that too.  With much love,”

So the call to action was made, e hele mai kakou, kokua malama ka aina (“come…lets all go! Help take care of our property”). And that we did.

For those in the know, we all had private moments when we picked up a Bud Light can or a cigarette (though Bob would have never, ever left one on the beach). We even had some guests, who would not give names, who have been here year after year, who as they put on their gloves and picked up their trash bag to go to work alongside of us they said “for Bob we would do anything”.

Following Bob’s wife’s advice, we cleaned and we had fun. We remembered and we took time to focus our attentions on doing better in the future.

E Bob e…Mahalo Nui Loa!

Now, to all our employees and our guests…in keeping with Bob’s concept of rememberence and then doing better…we have put new trash and recycling containers throughout the property. Our Green Committee would like be forced to come up with a new idea for next year. That can only happen if everyone puts their trash in the correct locations. It does not belong on our beaches.

Mahalo!

Bob Boyle Beach Clean Up

One year ago this week, Turtle Bay Resort lost a dear and special friend…Bob Boyle. Everyone who ever experienced an encounter with Bob experienced something that will always be a cherished memory. In Loving Memory of our dear friend, Bob Boyle, the Turtle Bay Resort Green Committee invites everyone interested to participate in a Beach Clean Up, Saturday, September 17th, (the one year anniversary of his passing), from 8 am to 11 am. Back-to-School Backpacks

On Sunday, July 31, 2011, Turtle Bay Resort, in conjunction with the Once-a-Month Church and its Pastor Ron Valenciana, donated 200 backpacks, and along with many other North Shore individuals and businesses filled the backpacks with all the necessary school supplies by grade level and gave them to students who’s families are struggling to get by…including the homeless and the less fortunate. The need has continued to increase over the past years as economic factors have affected many North Shore families.

This activity not only aided those along the North Shore of Oahu, but the West Shore as well, as five bus loads of children came from the Waianae area of Oahu. This annual event, spear-headed by Ron Valenciana, has aided thousands of children over the years. As school budgets have been continually slashed and as families have been required to provide more and more materials…the burdens can sometime seam impossible. Thanks to Ron Valenciana, Turtle Bay Resort and all the other individuals and companies that donated supplies and products this burden can be taken off the shoulders of those families who can least afford to carry it.

Lahaina Noon Tomorrow

The subsolar point on a planet is where its sun is directly overhead (in zenith), i.e. where the sun’s rays are hitting the planet exactly perpendicular to its surface. For planets with an orientation and rotation similar to the Earth’s, the subsolar point will move westward, circling the globe once a day, but it will also move north and south between the tropics over the course of a year.

Hawaii is the only state in the United States that is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn (the farthest North point and the farthest South point the sun stands directly over as a result of the planetary motions). This means that on its way toward the Northern most point and on its way back every summer the sun stands directly overhead, making all shadows of things like flagpoles and people disappear.

In Hawaii this event is known as “Lāhaina Noon”. The name came out of a contest by the Bishop Museum’s Planetarium in 1990. In the Hawaiian language, lāhaina means “cruel sun”. In older times it was known as kau ka la i ka lolo, which translates as “the sun rests on the brain”.

Join Keoki tomorrow, Wednesday, July 13th outside in front of the front entrance of the hotel for a demonstration beginning at 12:15 pm. The solar event will take place at 12:38 pm. Bring your cameras and pray for sun!

Golf Fest Tournament

Turtle Bay Golf announces a special benefit event, the Turtle Bay Golf Fest Tournament, with proceeds going to support the Kahuku High School Golf Team, on Saturday, July 30, 2011. The event will start at 8:00 am with demonstrations, tips, contests and special sales taking place until 12:00 noon Admittance to the morning events is free but registration is required at  (Register For Free Morning Activities Here).

The tournament will be held on the George Fazio Course at Turtle Bay Resort and it will start promptly at 12:30 pm (you must be in position at your assigned golf hole at 12:30 pm). The format is a 3-person scramble with 10% of the combined team handicap being applied.

The entry fee is $75 per person. You can register as a team of three or individually and you will be matched to a team. All registration is being done online at (Register and Pay for Tournament Here). The entry fee must be paid online at the time of registration. Lahaina Noon

If you are planning on being at Turtle Bay Resort on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, be sure to set an alarm (even though it will be at the middle of the day) so you won’t miss out on a special event that will only be seen on property at 12:38 pm.
